■Project Overview
BLIND SIMULATOR
■Background
■Goal
■Process
3. BLIND SIMULATOR
■Contents
■Result
Hamyang High School BLIND SIMULATOR VR Education Program
■Project Overview
Hamyang High School conducted a school-wide VR education program using approximately 50 VR headsets and BLIND SIMULATOR.
The project was designed to test whether VR could overcome the limitations of traditional visual impairment experiences, including limited capacity, safety concerns, restricted environments, and operational complexity.
- Organization: Hamyang High School
- Location: Music Room and Gymnasium
- Solution: BLIND SIMULATOR
- Participants: All students
- Period: Oct. 17 – Dec. 19, 2024
- Operation: 7 sessions over 4 days
- Environment: Approx. 50 standalone VR headsets
■Background
Traditional visual impairment activities usually involve blindfolded participants moving through real spaces. This requires close supervision, limits the number of participants, and makes it difficult to recreate potentially dangerous situations such as roads, vehicles, and public transportation.
The project also aimed to test whether a large number of students could participate without relying on school Wi-Fi or additional network infrastructure.
■Goal
The main goal was to verify whether BLIND SIMULATOR could be used as a large-scale disability awareness education program in a real school environment.
Key areas of evaluation included:
- Multi-user operation with approximately 50 VR headsets
- Safe simulation of roads, vehicles, and public transportation
- Use of sound and haptic feedback for spatial awareness
- Offline operation without external servers or internet access
- Reduced VR motion discomfort
- Efficient operation with a small number of instructors
- Educational value beyond a simple VR experience
■Process
The program followed four main steps:
1. Safety and device briefing
Students received basic instructions on headset use, controller operation, and safety.
2. VR setup and tutorial
Approximately 50 headsets were operated simultaneously, while in-app tutorials helped students learn detailed controls independently.
3. BLIND SIMULATOR experience
Students experienced the “Bus” scenario, moving from home through an elevator, parking area, crosswalk, and bus journey.
4. Reflection and survey
After the experience, students shared what they found difficult and reflected on mobility without visual information.
■Contents
The Hamyang High School program used the BLIND SIMULATOR Bus scenario.
The experience included:
- Tutorial
- Leaving home
- Using an elevator
- Passing through a parking area
- Crossing a road
- Taking a bus
Throughout the experience, students relied on:
- Limited visual information
- White-cane-based controller interaction

■Result
Large-scale simultaneous operation
Approximately 50 VR headsets were operated at the same time, allowing one to three classes to participate within a single class period.
Safe expansion of the experience
Situations such as parking areas, roads, traffic, and public transportation were recreated in VR without exposing students to real-world risks.
Educational potential
Students experienced mobility challenges through direct action rather than explanation alone, supporting the use of BLIND SIMULATOR as a disability awareness education tool.
Offline operation
All devices ran independently in a local environment without requiring external servers or internet access.
Sensory-based interaction
Students used sound, vibration, and cane-based interaction to understand their surroundings with limited visual information.
Low interruption from VR discomfort
In a class of approximately 50 students, only around one student typically paused due to VR discomfort, and most students were able to complete the experience.
Efficient instructor operation
The in-app tutorial reduced the need for repeated one-on-one instructions, enabling large groups of first-time VR users to participate with a relatively small number of instructors.
■Key Results
Approx. 50 VR Headsets Operated Simultaneously
7 Education Sessions Over 4 Days
School-Wide Participation
Offline Operation Without Internet Connection
