[Education] PATHFINDER Hosts VR Open Class at Haja Center: <The Difference Between Video Media and VR>
■ XR·VR and New Media Education for Youth at Haja Center
FUNNYBON, an XR·VR content and spatial technology company, previously operated under the name PATHFINDER and conducted a VR open class for upper elementary school students at Haja Center (Seoul Youth Hub for Future Careers).
The program went beyond a simple VR device experience. It was designed to help participants understand the differences between video media, VR, and virtual reality, while also encouraging them to think about how new media can be interpreted and understood.
At the time, PATHFINDER used XR content to help young participants engage with emerging technologies in a more accessible and interesting way. Today, the company continues as FUNNYBON, developing XR and spatial technologies as well as a range of immersive content experiences.
■ Helping Young Participants Understand XR and VR
Haja Center is a youth career platform that supports young people in exploring their own paths through a variety of experiences and career-related activities.
In this program, participants were encouraged to directly compare conventional video content with VR content and understand how the two differ.
Traditional video media delivers information through a screen, while VR allows users to enter a virtual environment, look around, move, and interact with content. By experiencing these differences firsthand, participants were able to develop a more intuitive understanding of XR and VR as emerging media.
■ Participatory New Media Education Through VR
The program included hands-on use of VR devices as well as sessions designed to improve participants’ understanding of virtual reality, video media, and new media.
Rather than simply watching content, participants were encouraged to move, explore the virtual environment, and interact with digital elements as part of the learning process. Many participants quickly adapted to the technology and were able to express their thoughts and impressions in their own words after the experience.
This experience highlighted the potential of XR and VR not only as entertainment or experiential content, but also as educational tools that can help young learners understand new technologies and broaden the way they think.
■ Learning About XR Through Direct Experience
XR and VR technologies can be used in education not only to present information, but also to help learners understand concepts through direct participation and experience.
For youth education in particular, allowing participants to see, move, and experience a technology firsthand can be more effective than explaining technical concepts only through words.
The program therefore focused not only on explaining the technology itself, but also on giving participants opportunities to experience, ask questions, and interpret what they encountered from their own perspective.
Through this program, FUNNYBON once again confirmed that effective XR education is not simply about introducing new technology. It is equally important to design how participants understand, experience, and engage with that technology.
■ Expanding XR Content into Education and Cultural Spaces
XR and new media technologies can be applied not only in schools and youth education institutions, but also in exhibitions, cultural facilities, experience spaces, and corporate training programs.
FUNNYBON plans to continue developing projects that help XR technology move beyond one-time experiences and become meaningful content that improves participation and understanding across education, culture, and exhibition environments.
We will continue to develop XR content and spatial experience programs that allow everyone, from young learners to general audiences, to engage with new technologies in an accessible way and gain new perspectives and learning experiences.
